Several online websites in February suddenly started echoing this stomach churning story. Apparently over 300,000 pounds of rat meat were seized as they arrived from China through the port of San Francisco just in time for Super Bowl Sunday.
As the story spread virally on websites, the FDA was compelled to issue this statement to the public via the Associated Press:
.. the agency “is not aware of the seizure of rat meat referenced” and the FDA never issued such a warning.
The hoax was busted by the news verification site snopes.com which identified the source of the story
…was World News Daily Report, a well-known peddler of fabricated news.
